Meet the Vet

Hey there! I'm Dr. Michelle Kneeland, a veterinarian with over a decade of experience treating birds including backyard chickens. I run my own mobile veterinary practice based in New England, where I travel around treating backyard flocks.

I quickly realized most of my clients were relying on inaccurate online resources or unhelpful facebook posts to answer their chicken health questions. I saw first-hand the devastating results this can have!

I created Chicken Vet Help to give backyard chicken owners a better solution for all those chicken health questions that pop up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost for a Text the Vet consult?

A one-time, flat fee of $30 allows you to send text messages back and forth with the vet for up to 48 hours. There are no surprise or hidden charges, and no recurring fees. If you need more help beyond the 48 hour period, you can book another consult.

Yes it’s really Dr. K! We do not use chatbots, AI, or other shortcuts. Dr. K personally responds to your text messages from her cell phone. That is one reason why there may be some delays in her response to your messages- she is helping a lot of chicken owners at the same time!

Dr. K is typically able to respond to messages during regular business hours (8:00am-5:00pm eastern time, Mon- Fri). She may occasionally be able to respond to messages outside of business hours, but there is no guarantee. There may sometimes be a delay in her response (a couple hours or more), so this service is not recommended if your chicken needs urgent help that cannot wait.

There is no specific limit on the number of messages you can send to Dr. K, but if you send a very high number of messages, it may create delays in Dr.K’s response or she may not be able to respond to all of your messages.

Due to current veterinary laws, we are NOT able to provide prescription medications such as antibiotics. In many cases, we can recommend over the counter at home treatments that do not require a prescription.

Yes, you can send us pictures or video of your chicken to help us see what the problem is

We are currently not able to offer phone calls, but we hope to add this service in the future as we grow!

What this Telehealth service is NOT:

This service is NOT a replacement for professional veterinary care, and does not establish a Veterinary-Client-Patient- Relationship (VCPR). It is always recommended to have your chicken seen in person by a veterinarian who can provide treatment and diagnosis.
